Pope Elementary School fourth-grade teachers perform their STAAR encouragement song, “All About Those 4s.” Pictured (L-R) are Eduardo Vasquez, Kimberly Marks, Tracy Jacobsen, Ashley Sanders, Jennifer Valladares, Tracey Fritsch, Courtney Bielski and Stephanie Tippit.
Using the tune from the Meghan Trainor song “All About That Bass,” the teachers recorded a parody version, “All About Those 4s,” promoting the top score of “4” on the STAAR writing exam, which starts March 30.
The teachers played the video for Pope students during a pep rally on March 27.
“The kids love it. They love seeing us be silly and act things out in front of them,” said Tracy Jacobsen, Pope’s 2014-2015 Spotlight Teacher. “It just motivates them. We want them to know we appreciate their hard work, that they have done such a good job and we believe in them, because they do get nervous on testing day.”
Jacobsen, who taught at Birkes Elementary School for 10 years before coming to Pope when it opened in 2013-2014, wrote the lyrics for the song. Music teacher Elaine Waier assisted the fourth-grade team with recording the vocals. Then, a week later, she videotaped the team—consisting of Jacobsen, Stephanie Tippit, Courtney Bielski, Tracey Fritsch, Ashley Borak, Jennifer Valladares and Eduardo Vasquez—performing the choreographed routine in costume.
“We could not stop laughing. It literally took us two hours,” Jacobsen said. “We had it all planned out, but it took a while to coordinate all eight teachers doing everything perfectly in sync. We had a great time together.”
Jacobsen then edited the music video at home using Windows Movie Maker.
“I thought it turned out great,” she said. “It’s just for the kids; we don’t expect it to go viral or anything.”
Other CFISD schools also created videos and held rallies to encourage their students for STAAR. Ault Elementary School followed up its successful Frozen parody from 2014 with its 2015 edition, “Do You Want to Sing a STAAR Song?”
